  • 11:15 – 11:30      Break
  • 11:30 – 12:30      Third Session
  • 12:30 – 13:00      A Toast for the New Year

Agenda:

  1. 1. The Truth about Index Fragmentation (Noam Brezis, Madeira)

Every DBA knows that rebuilding an index results with zero fragmentation and improves performance. Every DBA knows that creating a clustered index on an ever-increasing column, like IDENTITY, results in an index with almost no fragmentation. In this session we are going to demonstrate that these known facts, as well as some others, are not always true. We are going to show that what SQL Server reports as index fragmentation is not the real fragmentation. Yes, SQL Server is lying, and we’re going to prove it. We're also going to provide some useful tips about how to really improve index performance.

  1. 2. Monitoring Page Splits (Guy Glantser, Madeira)

Monitoring page splits in SQL Server is useful, especially now that we know how SQL Server actually calculates index fragmentation. It can be very useful, for example, in order to choose the appropriate fill factor for an index. By monitoring the number of page splits for a particular index over a period of time, we can determine whether the fill factor for that index should be adjusted in order to reduce the number of page splits and improve the overall performance. In this session we are going to demonstrate all the possible options to monitor page splits in SQL Server, and we are going to show that all these options are wrong. Yes, SQL Server is lying again, and we're going to prove it. We will then demonstrate the only (undocumented) method to correctly monitor page splits in SQL Server as of today, and the correct (documented) method available in SQL Server Denali.

  1. 3. Handling Parameterization in SQL Server (Saggi Neumann)

Parameterization is an important part of the Query Processor activity. In many cases the Optimizer chooses a bad execution plan due to parameterization issues. Understanding those issues is crucial to an efficient tuning and troubleshooting process. In this session we are going to demonstrate some classic parameterization issues and suggest useful tips and methods for handling those issues.
